Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
RSE Scheme of Work for Kingsmead School.
Whole School policy:
The learning intention for Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) at Kingsmead School and Sixth Form is designed to support pupils to establish and maintain positive and respectful relationships, between peers and with their teachers in school, as well as beyond the school gates. Our RSE curriculum has been developed in a way that will help pupils to build the interpersonal skills which are essential for them to determine and replicate the characteristics of healthy relationships, including communication, self-confidence, and respect.
We aim to prepare all pupils for navigating interpersonal and romantic relationships – including online. This is critical in our society, with continued awareness and attention drawn to women’s safety and the rise in misogyny and violence against women and girls.
RSE has been compulsory in Secondary Schools since 2020 and was reviewed for the first time in 2025. At Kingsmead, we agree with the guidance from the Department for Education (DfE) that it is important that parents and carers are informed/aware of the content delivered in the RSE curriculum in order that their children are supported towards positive and respectful interpersonal relationships both at school and at home.
The aims of our broad and balanced RSE Curriculum at Kingsmead School are to:
▪ provide pupils with a safe environment and respectful speaking frameworks in which sensitive and informed discussions can take place;
▪ prepare pupils for changes that will occur to their bodies during puberty, and give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene, including looking after their mental health;
▪ help pupils develop feelings of self-respect, confidence and empathy which will enable them to engage effectively with a variety of personal and professional relationships throughout their lives;
▪ create a positive and respectful culture around issues of sexuality and relationships;
▪ teach pupils the correct vocabulary to describe themselves and their bodies and to ensure they know how to obtain advice and support should they need it.
Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
The curriculum outlined below, is in line with statutory guidance from the Department for Education (DfE) issued under section 80A of the Education Act 2002 and section 403 of the Education Act 1996. We also build on learning in Primary Schools in line with guidance published by the DfE in 2019 while we await the current government’s response to the consultation in Summer 2024. Once this has been received, the policy and curriculum at Kingsmead School will, of course, be reviewed to ensure it continues to align with government guidance.
